Shake Shack brokers deal to expand American burger-custard chain to Mexico

Shake Shack has partnered with food and retail firm Grupo Toks to launch in Mexico with a store opening in Mexico City in 2019. The new development deal will pair the classic burger, hot dog and custard chain with the 40-year expertise of Mexico City-based Grupo Toks to build 30 stores throughout Mexico over the next ten years. Expect the first Shack in Mexico City to feature the chain’s classics: the ShackBurger, Shack-cago Dog, classic crinkle-cut fries, beer, wine and frozen custard ice cream.

In Mexico, 180-unit Shake Shack will work with local suppliers to build a flagship Shack that reflects the Mexico City community and heritage. “For years our fans have been asking for Shake Shack to land in their neighborhood, and we’re thrilled to partner with Grupo Toks to build a place for the CDMX (Mexico City, Mexico) community to gather for a ShackBurger,” said Michael Kark, vice president, Shake Shack Global Licensing.

New store development had fallen behind by the time financial results were reported by management in the second quarter of 2018 and Shake Shack and analysts predicted a surge in the last three months of the year. Shake Shack’s existing international markets include Kuwait, London, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Dubai, Tokyo, Moscow, and Seoul. Kuwait and Hong Kong are markets just entered during Q2.
