Sandwich is latest fried chicken sandwich wars salvo
The KFC Chicken Sandwich arrived at Kentucky Fried Chicken stores in select markets. The Yum Brands subsidiary plans to roll out the Chicken Sandwich to all U.S. restaurants by the end of February. The upcoming national launch comes after a successful test in the Orlando market last spring, noted Andrea Zahumensky, chief marketing officer, KFC US.
She added, “Many customers hadn’t considered KFC as a part of the chicken sandwich conversation, but anyone who tastes this sandwich will know, without a doubt, that we’re playing to win.”
KFC restaurants prepare the sandwich with KFC’s Extra Crispy chicken breast filet, featuring one quarter of a pound of all-white meat. The filet comes topped with thick pickles and the Colonel’s real mayo, or spicy sauce, on a buttery brioche bun.
Church’s Chicken and Zaxby’s are examples of two QSR chains that also recently added new or reformulated recipes of fried chicken sandwich to their menu. Currently, Sonic Drive-In is promoting its Chicken Slinger sandwiches, as well.
The Louisville, Ky.-based QSR’s innovation team tested eight variations of pickle thickness and worked with six different bakeries on 10+ recipes to select the right bun, according to a statement.
KFC continues to expand and improve its menu, releasing the KFC Secret Recipe Fries in 2020 nationwide. That side item is now its best selling.
As the rollout of the KFC Chicken Sandwich takes place, customers can check local availability at KFC.com/findthesandwich. The quick-service chicken chain will update the site daily.
Customers can select the KFC Chicken Sandwich a la carte for $3.99 or the KFC Chicken Sandwich combo meal, which includes KFC Secret Recipe Fries and medium drink, for $6.99
