Chipotle to offer gold foil-wrapped burritos to cheer on American athletes at Tokyo games

As Summer Olympics begin, ‘gold burritos,’ zero delivery fee celebrate occasion

Chipotle Mexican Grill will celebrate American athletes competing in the Summer Olympics in Tokyo with gold foil-wrapped burritos. Participating restaurants nationwide will wrap burritos in the gold foil for dine-in customers and digital orders beginning Jul 23, 2021.

The gold foil wrap has not been used at restaurants since 2011, when the Mexican-style fast casual celebrated its 18th anniversary, debuting the special wrap for the first time. The company said the limited-edition wrap is meant to cheer on American athletes to first-place finishes during the Summer Olympics.

“We pride ourselves on being a go-to restaurant for many of the country’s top competitors,” said Chris Brandt, Chipotle chief marketing officer. “Our gold foil is symbolic of our support of American athletics and commitment to providing Real Food for Real Athletes.”

This rollout follows the chain having added limited-time menu items in June to spotlight athletes and via new episodes of the chain’s “Unwrapped” video series. Chipotle provided additional information at chipotle.com/teamchipotle.

To further celebrate the occasion, from July 23 to August 1, 2021, Chipotle will offer a zero ($0) delivery fee on its app and at website for fulfillment from participating U.S. locations on orders over $10.
