Pizza Hut tests plant-based topping in Beyond Pepperoni Pizza

Beyond Meat, Pizza Hut partner for pilot in Albany, Columbus, Macon, Houston, Jacksonville

Pizza Hut partnered with Beyond Meat to introduce Beyond Pepperoni Pizza as a pilot in 70 locations. The test will feature plant-based Beyond Pepperoni, made from ingredients like peas and rice. The product, created by the culinary teams at Pizza Hut and Beyond Meat, has no GMOs, soy, gluten, hormones, antibiotics, or cholesterol, according to an announcement.

The five-market, 70-unit pilot will help the companies vet the plant-forward pepperoni meat alternative. It has a savory taste profile similar to Pizza Hut’s traditional pepperoni, which made the traditional pizza version the #1 selling pizza. Customers in Albany, N.Y.; Columbus and Macon, Ga.; Houston, Texas; and Jacksonville, Fla. will be the first to experience Pizza Hut’s Beyond Pepperoni Pizza.

Pizza Hut’s test of Beyond Pepperoni Pizza follows Little Caesars’ Planteroni Pizza and Sarpino’s Plant-Based Pepperoni launches, both using Field Roast Plant-Based Pepperoni.

“Pizza Hut’s new Beyond Pepperoni Pizza delivers the same iconic taste as our original pepperoni that fans know and love,” said Georgeanne Erickson, Pizza Hut chief brand officer. “With this new plant-based option, we’re giving customers more choices and more reasons to love Pizza Hut.”

The Beyond Pepperoni Pizza comes on Original Stuffed Crust and Original Pan crusts at the 70 test stores.
