Brooklyn Dumpling Shop opens in Storrs, near University of Connecticut

UConn location, with college-town demographics, bodes well for tech-forward, automat-style QSR

The Brooklyn Dumpling Shop opened near the University of Connecticut February 22 with franchise partner Matt Rusconi. The debut marks the first of five automat-style shops Rusconi, a Connecticut native, will own and operate under his agreement.

The downtown Storrs Brooklyn Dumpling Shop store debuted at 106 Royce Circle. Executives expect this location to do well as it is situated in a college town and is tech-forward. Through the automat system, the quick-serve restaurant serves its customers with no human interaction. Customers pick up their food when notified and scan their barcode.

The temperature-controlled lockers have become the gateway to a diverse dumpling assortment. Brooklyn Dumpling Shop’s menu consists of over 30 dumpling combinations, including Buffalo Ranch and Peanut Butter and Jelly.

“I am extremely excited to open the first Brooklyn Dumpling Shop franchise location here in downtown Storrs,” Rusconi said. “I have a long personal and professional history with this area as I grew up in eastern Connecticut and my dad graduated from UConn, not to mention that this is the fourth business I’ve been involved with in the area.”

The Manfield, Conn.-based QSR benefits from a pipeline of shops in over 10 states. The downtown Storrs Brooklyn Dumpling Shop marks the first of many shops planned to open this year.

This UConn opening comes on the heels of a multi-unit development agreement for five locations in the Philadelphia market.

“The amount of buzz we’ve already seen online around the store makes this a really exciting time for me and certainly for Matt,” said Stratis Morfogen, founder of Brooklyn Dumpling Shop. “The ‘direct messages’ have been piling in and the doors have hardly been opened—we’re ready to share our dumplings with the UConn community and look forward to doing so across Connecticut.”
