QSR will expand Joe Sempels’ role, adding the China market to his responsibilities
Jill McDonald will return to McDonald’s as EVP and president International Operated Market (IOM).The announcement from Chris Kempczinski, McDonald’s chief, was shared in a letter to employees of the burger giant. In addition, Jo Sempels will continue to lead the McDonald’s International Developmental Licensed Markets (IDLM) as senior vice president and president, IDL.
McDonald previously held the role of chief marketing officer for the McDonald’s UK business and Northern Europe. She also held the role of managing director for the UK business and president, Northern Europe.
The returning executive started her career at Colgate Palmolive, later joining British Airways. There, McDonald rose through the ranks to eventually lead Global Marketing. She joined McDonald’s after British Airways.
In her earlier posts at the QSR, “she sustained strong performance across all metrics of our business, including a strengthened brand, a reinvigorated employee experience and double-digit sales growth, all while fostering successful franchisee performance and engagement,” said Kempczinski.
He went on to note that her deep marketing expertise and experience in consumer-focused businesses—including at Costa Coffee, where she was CEO—make her an ideal executive to “accelerate the next phase of the IOM segment’s growth.” McDonald will report to Kempczinski.
In her returning role, which starts September 5, she will work closely with Manu Steijaert, Chief Customer Officer, and Morgan Flatley, chief marketing officer. As EVP and president, International Operated Markets, McDonald will be based in London and a member of the Global SLT (Senior Leadership Team). Plus, Kempczinski indicates she will take marketing and creative excellence to the next level, while elevating the crew and customer experience to ignite growth opportunities.
Furthermore, McDonald’s will add the fast-growing China business to Sempels’ oversight in his existing role as senior vice president and president, IDL.
He joins the Global SLT immediately, reporting to Kempczinski, who added, ‘I am extremely proud of our International team’s progress in driving our Accelerating the Arches strategy. With Jill [McDonald], Jo [Sempels] and their leaders in respective segments, we are well positioned to continue building on our success. I look forward to even greater growth across these markets through an enhanced customer and crew experience, and improved connectivity and collaboration between our Market and Global teams.”
