New protein rolls out at 3,200 stores across United States, Canada, UK, France, Germany
Chipotle Mexican Grill rolled out Chicken al Pastor protein in the United States, Canada and its markets in Europe. The global launch is a first for the Newport Beach, Calif.-based restaurant company. The Chicken Al Pastor reflects a savory flavor from a blend of adobo, morita peppers and ground achiote. A splash of pineapple, fresh lime and cilantro are also added.
The end product comes out with slightly-smoky notes and contains a hint of fruitiness, reminiscent of traditional al pastor dishes.
To celebrate the protein launch, Chipotle is offering a $0 delivery fee in the United States.
A fully-vetted recipe
Citing a Datassential 2021 menu report, Chipotle stated that al pastor preparation is one of the fastest growing. Furthermore, the report indicates that 43% of consumers select menu items at restaurants that they cannot easily replicate at home.
According to Chipotle, its restaurants prepare the Chicken Al Pastor in small batches throughout the day.
Chipotle began testing Chicken Al Pastor in Denver and Indianapolis in September. At the time, executives were optimistic about the 94-store pilot. The approach to the menu innovation was to create a product that bold, yet balanced. Spicy adobo, achiote, morita peppers, pineapple, cilantro, and lime juice were included in the original test recipe.
“Guests are looking to restaurants for unique menu items they cannot make at home, and al pastor has been gaining mass appeal in recent years,” said Chris Brandt, Chipotle chief marketing officer. “We’ve put our own spicy spin on al pastor with our freshly grilled chicken and have created a truly delicious menu item that fans will crave. It’s where fire meets flavor.”
